George Sand, The freedom to become yourself

Aurore Dupin chose her name, her profession, her clothes, her loves and her intellectual life: George Sand won the freedom to become herself, and refused to let her identity as a woman set the limits of her thinking. In a man’s jacket, cravat knotted at the neck, her gaze direct, she appears in Rachel Convers’s portrait just as she wished to be seen. Her handwriting spills across the page, with lines from Histoire de ma vie (Story of My Life) in which the author describes herself without complacency, “neither ugly nor beautiful,” and turns that observation into one more freedom. At the bottom, ink splatters and the signature sprawls: the name she gave herself.

A world of women poets and writers

Alongside Anna de Noailles, this series of portraits of women of letters, signed Rachel Convers, also features George Sand, who made her name under a man’s name to win the freedom to write. Each illustration blends portrait, manuscript and graphic details to show creation in the making: crossings-out, drafts, words scribbled in the margin. These literary posters pay tribute to the women authors who made writing a space of freedom.

George Sand embodies the freedom to become oneself: that of a woman who chose her name, her profession, her clothes and her loves. This new Portrait Collector, signed Rachel Convers, captures the strength of an author who refused to let her identity as a woman set the limits of her thinking. Around her, her handwriting spills across the page, with lines from Histoire de ma vie (Story of My Life) in which she describes herself as “neither ugly nor beautiful.” At the bottom, ink splatters and the signature sprawls: the name she gave herself. Far from being a mere painting, George Sand is a presence, that of a woman who won her place in a man’s world.

The George Sand Portrait is printed on aluminum dibond, a material prized for its stability and fine reproduction, and enhanced by a solid laminate frame that emphasizes the precision of the design and the depth of the colors. Printed in France by a local partner, it is then assembled and finished in our workshop. Each piece comes with a signed certificate of authenticity to guarantee its exclusivity.

The George Sand framed portrait is delivered ready to hang, with a wall mounting system included. Its Dibond backing makes it impervious to temperature changes and humidity, preserving its brilliance over time.

Easy to clean, a soft, dry cloth is all you need to maintain the intensity of the look and the depth of the details. A timeless work, designed to give character and uniqueness to walls.
